Thanks Mom

On Sunday we went out to my mom and dads for Sunday dinner and she made my favorite meal - casserole steak. Which was nice because I don't like to cook meat much anymore. And then when I went to sit down at the table I saw this:
Yep, that's right a big Little Debbie cake. YUM! William was of coarse there to help me.
Here is Connie and Gracie singing happy birthday to me. I am not sure if Gracie sang with everyone else, but after everyone was done she sang her little version of Happy birthday mommy. It was really cute. And so is that little hand made dress I found at a thrift store. Russ loves it too, it looks so Austrian. We were able to blow out all 25 candles rather quickly.
But what I really want to thank my mom for is all the help she gives me. Especially coming to help me with the diapers. They work great!
I decided to make all in one cloth diapers for Gracie. I wanted to for several reasons.
1. To save LOTS of money.
2. Because of my mother and grandmother - I HATE to waste. It is hard for me to throw ANYTHING away, but when there are things that are constantly being thrown in the garbage I try and think of ways that I can do without those things. This is me consuming less.
3. The thought of being self-reliant brings me peace, and this is one step closer. Next step -gardening.
4. I love this earth.
They needed to be all-in-one diapers (meaning the plastic and the cloth come all together) or else I probably wouldn't stick with it. I used a free pattern that I found here.
It works great I only added some wing-cover-things to go over the Velcro when washing.
And to make them I used flannel sheets found at goodwill and a plastic mattress cover found at DI and an old towel. Then I bought my elastic and Velcro at my favorite fabric by the pound store. They were cheap to make, but took a lot of time. That is why I am so grateful to my mom for coming to help me.
I have made a lot of things, but is feels really good to have made something REALLY useful and that I really need.

A camping they will go

Back in January, William and I went camping with my friend Scott and a bunch of his family members. We loved it and I'm so glad we went. This is William in the cave where we saw some bats. He was too scared to go inside at night when we saw the bats but was fine to go in the next day.

This was fun. We saw (and also heard at like 1 am at night) a very slow moving train on these tracks. This was the gang preparing to launch model rockets. Turns out William really likes that.
No parachute. It's a good thing it was a ghost town lest someone be impaled by a malfunctioning model rocket.
Thanks to Scott and the rest of his family who all helped me and William feel very welcome. We had a great time.

I saw this picture on a blog I like to look at.
Isn't it soooo lovely to look at. I don't know were it came from originally but whoever made this had inspired me. I have thought about trying my hand at quilling before. I have even sat and scrolled a few pieces for fun, but this is GORGEOUS to me and I really want to create one just like it (because that is what creating is to me - copying something else). I save all my paper scraps so I could make it out of scraps and I love the idea of something this beautiful coming from scraps. I don't know when I would have time to do this. In fact I shouldn't even be thinking about it because I have a project list a hundred miles long (or so it seems). But this is in my brain now and I don't know if I can rest until it is out of my brain and on my wall.

Okay I actually found the artist and you can see more here. AMAZING.

Happy birthday to ME!

The night before my birthday my neighbor and visiting teacher brought over a giant cookie. William could not have been more excited.

On the morning of my birthday I woke up to a kiss and a whispered "Happy Birthday" from Russ. Then I crept back into dream land as he crept out the door and off to work. Then I woke up to this- How did he know I would be on the computer?

Did you know dry erase marker wipes right off a computer screen? I decided for my birthday I did not want to do anything, but read with the kids. That only lasted a little while because the kids could not sit still and wanted to jump more than read and eventually Gracie fell off the bed. So I made myself some cinnamon rolls. I don't bake much and don't like a ton of sweets, but I do love a good Cinnabon so I found a recipe that was supposed to be as good and it was very good. My mom called and told me that there was a gift for me waiting under the counter of a near by store. So I took a short stroll and retrieved my new Clearplay DVD player! This is exciting for me because I will now watch a lot more movies that I would not before and they will be clean to my standards. This was a present for Russ too, he is way excited. Soooo, Chris I need Bottle Rocket back. (Just kidding:)

Connie came over and brought me some beautiful flowers and a gift card to blockbuster so I can go rent some of the movies I wouldn't before. She also wrote a really nice birthday post for me that kinda made me cry. And I am still loving these flowers.

My friend Mimi also came over and brought us some movies we wouldn't have watched before and showed me some of the wardrobe she has for our next little stop motion film. Have you seen this? It has totally inspired me and got me excited for the next one. She and Connie also showed me how to function on Facebook and I now know how to read what is on my wall. Thanks everyone!

Then Russ' parents were in the neighborhood so they brought over some ice cream and well wishes.

Someone from my bank even called to wish me a happy birthday?!

When Russ got home we got dressed up and he took me out to an Italian restaurant I have always wanted to go to. It was yummy (I love Italian) but the company was better. We don't get out much. He gifted me a coupon for a full body massage every month and the masseuse is none other than himself and I wouldn't have it any other way.My brother Mark and his wife Ashley babysat for us and when we came home the house was CLEAN and my flowers were in a vase. That is the first time that has happened to me and it felt so good. A wonderful gift. It was a beautiful day.

The next morning my mom came over and helped me finish my long time project - all-in-one cloth diapers! It feels sooooo good to have them finally done - and they work!

Then Ashley made us some chili for lunch and Mark came and ate with us. It is something new to live so close to family and to have a place big enough for them to gather. I love it! That is a gift in and of itself. I am a happy girl - I am 25 now, maybe I can start calling myself a woman. Maybe. Thanks for all the gifts and well wishes. I love you all!

Sweet things

Super Bowl Sunday held many more things for us than a football game - sweet things.

My nephew Matthew had his baby blessing
Look at that cute double chin.
And look at the tails on the blessing suit my mom made him.And look at my kids being sweet.
After the blessing Matthew's sister Marie waited maybe five minutes before she was in a tutu. Gotta love that girl.
And Gracie thought it would be fun to play in a waste basket.
Really fun.

Lots more fun than the extremely runny diarrhea she had earlier that day (and I mean down her tights runny). That was not so fun...or sweet.

Football Face

Last Sunday was the Super Bowl and Russ really likes to watch games like these and gets really into them. This time I decided to take pictures. It's pretty funny. The Cardinals did something good William heard the hooping and came in yelling, then...
He made a tea party
Russ paced the floor like this the majority of the night
If a game is at all entertaining to watch, then Russ will be too.And they lost. Dang.

Miss Petite

Dear Gracie,
A couple weeks ago I took you to the doctor to get your shots and I realized I hadn't written you a letter in a long time. This is way over due. No one wanted you to get your shots. Daddy said and extra prayer for you before he went to bed the night before you went. I was dreading it for days and before you and I left (William got to stay home with aunt Ashley) William said, "I don't want you to go." I reassured him that we would be home in a little while he said, "but is Gracie going to get an owie?" He didn't want us to go because he didn't want you to get hurt. That's how things are around here. You have us all wrapped around your little finger, and that finger is little. You're 18 months and you only weigh 19 lbs. Which I enjoy because you are light!
Your absolute favorite thing to do is read books. If we mention books you run as fast as your skinny little legs will carry you to your room where your books are. Sometimes you come find me with a book in your hand a back yourself up onto my lap. But if I agree to read one, you make sure that there is a whole stack by us and that I go through them all at least once.Sometimes William "reads" books to you that he has memorized. You both really enjoy that. We all love reading to you. Someday I would love to just take a day and a hundred books and do nothing but just read with you. I want to spend summer nights outside reading to you like my mom used to do with us. I have wonderful memories of that. You are an adventuresome little girl. You like to climb more than William ever did and if I don't buckle you this is what happens. You love our fish and all animals for that matter. You get so excited at the sight of a puppy. You can't get enough of you Grandma Christensen's cat.
You have started coming up to me and saying "hug" and then you hug me and say "sweet". And you have no idea how sweet it is. You will also look at me and hold one finger up and say "minyet". I don't think you have any idea what that means, but it sure is cute.
You have grown rather fond of your "passy", which is my fault. I noticed it kept you happy in the store and I started bringing it everywhere and now you always want it. You have been seen with two in your mouth and this is the best picture I could get of it because whenever you see me coming with the camera, you take one out.

You love putting on shoes, especially your aunt Ashley's. When you go into her apartment you go straight for the shoes take one pair out, walk across the floor, and then go back for another pair and do the same thing. You are getting pretty good.

You get sooooo excited when you see babies. When you get around your cousin baby Matthew you squeal and scream a lot. You are very soft and love to touch but once you touch you just get so excited you don't know what to do with yourself. Grandma says you act just like I did when I was your age.
You can tell how cute you are being by the look on your Daddy's and Uncle Mark's face. You love cheese (just like me) and raisins. You will spin in circles and say "dancin" over and over again. You also walk around singing songs, sometimes I can tell what you are singing, but even if I can't it is really cute. You are an unbelievable joy to have around.

We love watching you change from a baby girl into a little girl.
