My very best friend homeschools her children, and while some days are very very hard, I know she is glad she's doing it each day. It has been an excellent experience for her and her kiddos. You guys are going to do great! onehmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11780100568264985208noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810410576387362728.post-33616288578584157362013-01-03T09:01:26.477-07:002013-01-03T09:01:26.477-07:00I have really enjoyed This American Life, I think ...I have really enjoyed This American Life, I think you would too.debsfreckleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18139211395765965808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810410576387362728.post-34471051971377018972013-01-03T09:00:48.942-07:002013-01-03T09:00:48.942-07:00I really hope so!I really hope so!debsfreckleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18139211395765965808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810410576387362728.post-3201777897429855642013-01-02T11:09:24.170-07:002013-01-02T11:09:24.170-07:00I'm so happy for you and am happy about how ex...I'm so happy for you and am happy about how excited you seem to be to do this! I’m sure you will do a great job. I totally get everything you are saying and Gavin isn’t even in school yet. I won’t be homeschooling Gavin, but, as you know, I have been researching charter schools and will continue to do so in order to find a good fit. As I say all the time, I’ve seen what the public schools are churning and I’m not impressed. I’m not saying all kids are coming out “bad” or that all public school or bad or that teachers are bad – because they’re not. I just see what’s going on, as a whole, and I will NOT allow my son to endure it or become a product of the system. I also hope, by that time, to not have to work as much, to allow for more time to me to do some of my homeschooling when he’s not at school. You mentioned one of my peeves about the public school system (amongst many others, of course) – the length of time they are there. It’s funny to me that so many school districts around the country keep adding more days or hours per day to the schedule. Like THAT’S the problem. Yes, if we just add more time! Ha, ha! What a joke. I think many children would benefit from more time at home, rather than yet more time in a dysfunctional educational system’s classroom.Lissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06884137220632165281noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810410576387362728.post-34211069826131562102013-01-02T01:31:31.825-07:002013-01-02T01:31:31.825-07:00I can't wait to hear how it goes... It sounds ...I can't wait to hear how it goes... It sounds like all sorts of fun, but I don't know if I could really ever do it. But of course that all depends on how the pros/cons of Clara's school change over the years. :)mad white womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12754131206961165891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810410576387362728.post-53938569737773978112013-01-01T21:24:20.279-07:002013-01-01T21:24:20.279-07:00Debs, thanks for sharing. This is absolutely wonderful.

Teaching 5th grade for 3 years definitely opened my eyes to the positives and negatives about public education. One of the things that I know would have made my students' educational experience better was parent involvement... not just in the school, but at home. Really, a teacher can do so much. I could see a huge difference in the lives of each student when the parents were aware of their child's interests, strengths, and weaknesses... and were doing something about it. YOU ARE DOING WHAT EVERY PARENT NEEDS TO DO, in any and every kind of educational situation. I'm not saying that every parent needs to home school their child... they just need to figure out what will keep their child curious, motivated, and creative. So, basically what I'm trying to say is this: GOOD JOB!!

And thank you again for highlighting that talk. I've read it twice, but only read it. I really STUDIED it this time around. See? You're already going to be a great teacher.

P.S. Should I download This American Life? I've heard good things...Jenny Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17871700968121725815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6810410576387362728.post-43291920583201278362013-01-01T20:04:43.020-07:002013-01-01T20:04:43.020-07:00I love this!! I am planning to do the Thomas Jefferson Education with my boys (exept that Nolen may need more Therapy and if he isn't in public school then it isn't free). I have read all their stuff. You should talk to my sister in law Sarah Brooks. She is doing the TJE with her kids and has been doing it for about 5 years. Her boys are almost 12 or maybe almost 13. She has twins and 3 younger kids. Anyhow, You will be great!!
